What room do you actually need?

Jon Twigge · 22 September 2026

A few weeks ago I wrote about being bored at work. Life can look fine from the outside, the job still pays, but the weeks keep repeating. You can be sitting in a meeting and longing to be somewhere else.

That post ended on a simple point. If the job was convenient but not the best fit, it is a bad moment to have no clear idea of what would.

So here is the next question. What kind of work do you actually need?

Boredom was only the clue

People often treat boredom as a mood to fix with more coffee, a side project, or a louder motivational talk.

Sometimes the mood is pointing at something else. The job was convenient, but it wasn't the best fit. You stayed because leaving is costly and the diary is full.

Work is already shifting in quieter ways, even when the big unemployment number stays dull. In that setting, a job that is only convenient gets expensive. You need a clearer read of the work that suits you, not a pep talk for the job you already have.

What the portrait is for

what-world-way tries to name that fit with three short free tests and one portrait.

  • What is the role you lean toward when you are at your best.
  • World is the kind of place that feels like home, and how big a world you want around you.
  • Way is how you move when you are being yourself.

Taken together, that is a practical map of the room you need: what you bring, where you belong, and how you move.

When we say "play to your strengths," that is what we mean. A usable picture, so you stop forcing yourself into a shape that was never yours.

Knowing yourself is the starting point

Self-knowledge is not a hobby for when work is calm. It is how you choose, or push for, work that uses you well, and how you show up with other people.

Coaches and teams can use the same portrait in a room together. Individuals usually need it alone first.

You do not need a crisis to look. A quiet hour and three free tests are enough.

The free portrait

The tests and the portrait are free at every depth on what-world-way. There is an optional paid interpretation on top, in the hope of covering costs. We are a non-profit.

If the earlier post named the wrong room, get a picture of the right one before AI moves the furniture.
